I don’t really like e-mail, but the world being what it is, I have to have it. For now, at least. I suppose that some people, like Joan Didion and Garry Wills, can choose not to have it. So I have it, but I’d rather you call so that we can talk. I’m at (203) 432-8650. If your plan is out of minutes for the month, or there’s a non-fiction prose emergency and I’m not answering my phone, you can reach me at mark.oppenheimer aaht yale.edu. If I’ve been caught in a compromising position that will call to mind Eliot Spitzer, Hugh Grant, or Eddie Murphy, then I have no comment except that I am taking some time to heal my family and then will return to public life—in the meantime, I am directing all inquiries to my literary agent, Betsy Lerner of Dunow, Carlson + Lerner, who can be reached at betsy@dclagency.com.

Mark, Have just read your recent piece on Bob Avakian, which asked the very common sense questions I’ve been wondering myself all these years. One you didn’t ask: When he fled the U.S., why would he pick France instead of China? Must’ve been the revolutionary food. And your point about staying underground when no one’s looking for him is pure Stephan Verkhovenksky from The Devils. Still and all, for the last couple years I’ve been active with World Can’t Wait, which has done very good work around impeachment and organizing against the war. Near as I can tell, most of the leadership is RCP. Best, Bud Hazelkorn, Berkeley, SF
